Avoid idling.

VW New Beetle was probably the most successful retro-car resurrection of all time. When VW re-introduced the model back in 1998, it quickly gained enormous popularity, flew off dealer lots, and won countless awards. VW had a hit on their hands.

The New Beetle got much of the original’s fun-loving attitude and cheeky character — though it shared its guts with the new Jetta and Golf. Originally, the New Beetle was available with a 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine with 115 horsepower, or a 1.9 litre TDI four-cylinder diesel unit. The diesel engine uses less fuel, though the simple 2.0 litre gas engine should inexpensively meet the needs of most drivers.

Later in the Beetle’s life, a 1.8 litre turbo four cylinder engine was available with 150 horsepower, and a 2.5 litre five-cylinder unit eventually replaced all of the above as Beetle’s sole engine option. Manual, automatic and “Tiptronic” gearboxes were all available — depending on the model.

The gist? It shouldn’t be hard to find a Beetle that’s just perfect for your needs and budget.

WHAT OWNERS LIKE: The upscale interior, fun-to-drive factor and fuel consumption ratings are primary points of owner praise. Stereo systems with iPod integration were appreciated, as was the refined overall experience.

WHAT OWNERS HATE: The two biggest gripes reported by owners deal with visibility and trunk space — though some note squeaks and rattles that develop over time, too.

COMMON ISSUES: Looking at a TDI model? Be sure the idle is relatively smooth and free of missing, which could indicate a compression problem or potential engine damage.

Be sure the 1.8 litre turbo engine, if equipped, idles and pulls smoothly, too. These engines were known for frustrating failures of the electric coil packs that fire the spark plugs. If the engine ‘misses’, that’s likely what’s going on.

Also, be sure the timing belt on the turbo engine is within its service life and that oil changes were carried out within prescribed limits. Suffice to say a poorly-maintained 1.8T engine is not a desirable thing to own.

Get under the car and check for any signs of leaks, especially coolant. This could indicate a water-pump that’s readying to fail.

THE VERDICT: The used New Beetle comes standard with a great sense of community and great driving dynamics. It’s also a great candidate for a thorough pre-purchase mechanical inspection and extended warranty opt-in.

VW you can use regular oil

For a 1999 2.0 liter NON turbo VW you can use regular oil and regular gas. Its the only engine that can run regular fuel and regular oil. Normally, 5-30 is used in this vehicle. If you can afford it, use a synthenic oil like Mobil 1 0-40w European formula. It will meet the requirements you have.
Be aware though, that the 2.0 liter NON turbo has a history of high oil consumption; 1200 to 1500 miles per quart of oil usage is not uncommon.. so check the oil level regularly and don't top it off, just add oil when it gets to the top of the add area of the dipstick. The 2.0 liter NON turbo four is good engine, just not very smooth or powerful; however, if the oil is checked regularly and added when needed, it will last a very long time. It is in my humble opinion, the most reliable of the late model water cooled VW engine (based upon dealership service experience).

The VW Beetle is a cult favorite here in the States, but in Germany, it's not so well loved. That could be part of the reason why Volkswagen has been slow to produce a successor to the new Beetle, but word from Motor Trend is that two models could be coming shortly. The first Beetle will be based off the Gen-VI Golf and will hit production in 2010 or 2011.

Word out of Wolfsburg is that a second Beetle could be on the way as well, but this one would be based off the up! minicar. That would give VW a sub-brand Beetle lineup, kind of like what Toyota has with Scion, but with an eye on MINI buyers. The smaller up!-based Beetle would also be more true to the original Bug, which was a cheap and efficient "People's Car" with the engine out back (supposedly). Quality problems and a weak dollar have lead VW to struggle in the U.S. over the past few years, but an inexpensive, reliable car with top-notch fuel economy would go a long way toward reversing that trend.

The "New Beetle" was a smash hit when it debuted in 1998, and the cutesy little Bug immediately jumped to sales of 83,434 the next year. Over the next 10 years, however, Volkswagen left the spiritual successor to the original Beetle out to dry, and sales have steadily dropped down to near nothingness. AutoWeek is reporting that Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of VW of America, confirmed at a press event in Germany that a long overdue redesign of the New Beetle is coming in 2012, and packaging will be vastly improved. The current back seat of the New Beetle is a real problem being far too small and uncomfortable for a vehicle in the small car segment. Jacoby says the next Beetle will have a larger rear quarters and better packaging, without growing much beyond its current dimensions. Jacoby says the Beetle will also be used by VW as a kind of low-cost halo car, showing that the German automaker has returned to its roots of building cars for the people. It's great that VW is finally getting around to making the next New Beetle, but with 14 years between redesigns, we're thinking VW needs to knock the next little Bug out of the park if it once again wants to catch the eye of the car-buying public.

Buktinya, pada semester kedua tahun ini, tepatnya saat gelaran Indonesia International Motor Show 2009, bulan Juli nanti, VW akan meluncurkan varian MPV nya, yakni VW Touran. Hal tersebut diutarakan CEO PT Garuda Mataram Motor (GMM), Andrew Nasuri, dalam acara media gathering VW di Djakarta Theater Building, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jakarta, Selasa, (14/4/2009) "Kita akan keluarkan VW Touran, pada semester II-2009 ini, bersamaan dengan IIMS nanti," ujar Andrew. Rencananya, Touran akan mengusung mesin terbaru dari VW, yakni TSI 1.400 cc berbahan bakar bensin, yang mampu menyemburkan tenaga sampai 170 dk, serta sudah memenuhi standar emisi Euro 4. MPV 7 seater ini nantinya akan mengambil tempat pada pasar di atas Toyota Avanza, dan lebih cenderung untuk berbagi jatah dengan Honda Freed ataupun Innova. Akan tetapi, mengenai kisaran harga, Andrew belum berani gegabah untuk membukanya saat ini, mengingat kondisi kurs rupiah yang masih belum stabil. VW akan memperketat persaingan dalam industri perakitan mobil di Indonesia

JAKARTA -- Volkswagen AG, produsen otomotif terbesar Eropa akan menanamkan modalnya di Indonesia senilai 140 juta dolar AS dalam dua tahun ke depan untuk membangun pabrik di Indonesia. Menyusul pulihnya ekonomi global yang diharapkan dapat mendongkrak daya beli masyarakat.

Menurut Ketua BKPM, Muhammad Luthfi, pabrik mobil Jerman ini akan membangun pabrik yang mampu memproduksi 50 ribu unit kendaraan jenis multi purpose vehicle (MPV) Touran. Pemerintah akan memfasilitas insentif pajak kepada Volkswagen, kata Luthfi tanpa menjelaskan lebih lanjut.

Bagi Volkswagen membangun kendaraan jenis MPV dinilai 30 persen lebih murah dibanding negara Asia Tenggara lainnya karena adanya keringanan pajak pemerintah. Pabrik mobil yang bermarkas di Wolfsburg ini juga mengembangkan bisnisnya di Cina dan India sebagai pengganti pasar di Eropa dan AS yang lesu akibat krisis. ''Volkswagen adalah merek global yang akan tampil di negara ini. Ini sangat penting,'' kata Luthfi dikutip Bloomberg.

Sebelumnya pada 11 Mei silam, Volkswagen akan menggunakan pabrik di Indonesia sebagai pusat produksinya untuk memenuhi pasaran otomotif di Asia tenggara. Namun, Mathilda Rinta, juru bicara Volkswagen Indonesia tidak memberikan komentar terkait hal itu.

Volkswagen juga akan menanamkan modal 776 juta dolar AS dengan mitra lokal untuk mengembangkan pabriknya. Bila Maret lalu, Volkswagen telah membuka pabriknya senilai 580 juta Euro di India. Salah satu unit usaha Volkswagen, Lamborghini SpA telah membuka sebuah dilernya awal tahun ini setelah Indonesia tercatat mencapai rekor penjualan mobil 607.805 unit tahun lalu.

Sebelum Touran, Toyota Motor Corp. telah melansir Toyota Kijang yang telah hilir mudik di tanah air sejak 1977. Belakangan Honda Motor Co. juga tidak mau ketinggalan dengan menampilkan Honda Freed beberapa waktu lalu.

VW buka pabrik di Indonesia ??

Jakarta - Produsen Jerman yang siap memproduksi mobil di Indonesia terungkap sudah. Pabrikan itu adalah Volkswagen (VW).

VW menyiapkan dana investasi senilai 35 juta euro atau sekitar Rp 485 miliar untuk membangun pabrik perakitan di Indonesia. Dana ini bisa saja bertambah.

Seperti dikutip Wall Street Journal, Kamis (7/5/2009), VW akan membangun pabrik itu di daerah timur Jakarta, Atau sejam dari pusat kota Jakarta.

Pabrik di Indonesia ini merupakan VW yang pertama di Asia di luar China.

Juru Bicara VW Christoph Adomat ketika dikonfirmasi mengakui perusahaannya tengah menyiapkan pembangunan pabrik di Inonesia. Pabrik ini akan mulai dibangun pada bulan Juli atau sesudahnya.

Mobil yang akan dirakit di Indonesia merupakan mobil-mobil penumpang, dengan jumlah produksi yang masih belum bisa diperkirakan.

"Pabrik perakitan lokal ini disiapkan sebagai langkah pertama VW di pasar ASEAN yang tengah berkembang," ujarnya.

Sayang Adomat tidak memerinci rencana VW ini lebih lanjut.

Saat ini, mobil-mobil VW diimpor langsung ke Indonesia. Ini berarti VW terkena tarif atau pajak hampir 200 persen. Dengan membangun pabrik di Indonesia, mobil-mobil VW akan lebih murah dibanding harga sekarang.

Hmm, harga mobil VW pastinya lebih terjangkau untuk masyarakat Indonesia.

Pernyataan juru bicara VW ini mengonfirmasi Kepala Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM) M Lutfi yang menyebutkan bakal ada pabrikan Jerman yang membuka pabrik perakitan baru di Indonesia.

Sen. Lamar Alexander said Thursday that Volkswagen’s new plant in Tennessee could be affected if the country’s financial crisis isn’t resolved, while a spokeswoman for the automaker downplayed the impact."We build great cars. But our costs are far higher than our targets," Wolfgang Bernhard, head of the VW brand, told the Wolfsburg workforce just over a week ago. "Let us all pull together to make this plant viable and your jobs safe. Wolfsburg has to get off the reserves' bench and become our striker."

Alexander, R-Tenn., said he was told by executives at the recent opening of Volkswagen AG’s new American headquarters in Virginia last week that the German automaker’s credit branch is having trouble securing the $300 million it borrows each month to make car loans.

If that credit crunch gets worse, it could affect VW’s plans to build cars at a new plant in Chattanooga, Alexander said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from Washington.

“If a company the size and prestige of Volkswagen can’t get the money to make car loans, then I can’t buy a car,” Alexander said. “And if I can’t buy a Volkswagen, they’re not going to be making any in Chattanooga, and people aren’t going to have jobs.”

Volkswagen spokeswoman Jill Bratina denied the financial crisis will have any impact on the company’s plans to build a $1 billion assembly plant and create 2,000 jobs in Chattanooga.

“Our Volkswagen Credit business is extremely strong,” she said. “We have access to the necessary funds and will continue to offer a full range of services to our customers and dealers.”

Alexander said he expects Congress to reach an agreement by the end of the weekend over a $700 billion bailout plan to rescue financial institutions from crippling debt.

“People are beginning to understand that what we’re talking about is whether a Tennessean can get a student loan or a mortgage loan, or car loan, or whether our home values are solvent,” he said. “This is a circumstance none of us has ever seen before.”

Tennessee Congressmen Jimmy Duncan and Zach Wamp, both Republicans, agree quick action is needed to restore confidence in the financial system, but they have serious reservations about the bailout plan being pushed by Congress and the president.

“Congress should never have been put in a position of having to intervene in the private sector,” Wamp said.

Wamp said he won’t make up his mind on a compromise being negotiated by Congressional leaders, until he sees the details, but either way “I’m just sick having to vote on it … I am literally in prayer about it.”

Government intervention in the private sector goes against his core beliefs, but doing nothing could cost Tennessee jobs and rob workers of retirement benefits, Wamp said.

“I’ve casts thousand and thousands of votes and this is going to be really the worst of all,” Wamp said.

Rep. John Duncan Jr., R-Tenn., praised President Bush for his remarks Wednesday, but said they didn’t change his mind about the bailout proposal.

“They are asking us to do something that we really can’t afford. I assume we’re going to do it anyway,” Duncan said. “The only way we can come close to affording it is to have drastic cuts in programs, which we are not going to do with a Democrat-controlled Congress.”

Duncan lamented that the federal government is spending more money now than at any time he can remember since joining Congress.

“It’s big government liberalism that got us into this mess and now they’re saying we need more government to get us out. I sure am against the whole way of going about this. There’s not a good choice. It’s ridiculous to bail out millionaires on Wall Street when we won’t do the same to people on Main Street,” Duncan said, stopping short of saying he will vote against the bail-out package.

Duncan said all the details of the bi-partisan proposal have not been received on Capitol Hill, so he can’t make a decision until he’s seen the full package.

Details still being worked out include ways to avoid what Alexander called “excessive risk” for taxpayers.

“We ought to make sure we have aggressive oversight, that any revenues that go to government go to reduce our federal debt and not into the federal piggy bank, and that executives of firms that got into trouble don’t get rich as a result of us buying these mortgages,” he said.

Alexander praised the two presidential nominees, Democratic Sen. Barack Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain, for agreeing to meet with President Bush and work toward a solution.

But Alexander said he hadn’t expected McCain’s announcement that he wanted to postpone Friday’s presidential debate in Mississippi to focus on the economy.

“I’m a little surprised by it, frankly,” Alexander said. “I hope it goes ahead.”

Belmont University in Nashville is scheduled to host the second presidential debate on Oct. 7.

Alexander said another issue of importance to Tennesseans working its way through Congress is a proposal for a two-year extension of the sales tax exemption for states like Tennessee, Florida and Texas that don’t have an income tax.

Alexander said about 600,000 Tennesseans are eligible for the deduction, and that it saves an average of $400 a year on federal taxes.

“It’s only fair that Tennesseans are able to deduct their state and local taxes, just as citizens in more than 40 states are able to do it,” he said. “We’ve decided we don’t want a state income tax, and we shouldn’t be penalized for that.”

The sales tax deduction was part of a package passed by the Senate that included energy incentives and Alternative Minimum Tax proposals. But the House is evaluating each of those proposals in separate bills, which could lead to a showdown between the two chambers.

“That means none of it may become law,” Alexander said. “So I hope the House changes its mind.”
The striker is severely injured at the moment. With its four chimneys and brick-block construction, Wolfsburg towers like a vast Battersea power station above the North German Plain. It has 75,000 employees, of whom 25,000 work in administration at VW's headquarters, while 10,000 make parts for the assembly line.

Mr Bernard, who was booed and whistled at by the Wolfsburg workforce, unveiled charts showing that VW loses €1,020 (£700) on every Golf it makes. The new Golf, to be launched in 2009, has to be at least €1,500 cheaper to build. This would make it profitable, but if the car is to be competitive, costs would probably have to be even lower than that. Meanwhile, price pressure is hitting home, and traditional Golf drivers are deserting it for other cars, such as SUVs.

Cost-cutting will require dropping over-engineered features, including the Golf's complex rear-axle, to slash construction time from 50 hours to less than 30. Purchasing, logistics and manufacturing processes have to be improved. But, above all, it means fewer jobs.

"We must make our labour costs competitive," Mr Bernhard said. "If we do that, cars can be produced in Wolfsburg competitively. Secure jobs depend upon competitiveness."

Mr Bernhard wants to raise the 28.8-hour working week on the assembly line to 35 hours without raising pay. This would bring Wolfsburg and VW's other plants in line with their German competitors. At the same time, he hopes to persuade 20,000 German workers to leave VW with voluntary redundancy packages worth up to €250,000 each. To date, just 800 workers have opted to do so. The unions point out that VW's plants are located in areas of high unemployment, and the payments would be halved by tax. The chief union negotiator, Hartmut Meine of IG Metall, has flatly refused to renegotiate the current contract, which guarantees job security past 2010.

The crisis at Wolfsburg and VW is so deep that Mr Bernhard recently aired the idea that the next Golf might not be built there. "We want to build the next Golf in Wolfsburg," he said, "but only if the company does not pay for every car sold."

The suggestion that Wolfsburg might, in effect, be closed down caused union outrage. Anger was also expressed about a story, quickly denied by the company, that suggested VW wanted to cut its German workforce by 30,000.

Feelings are running high. The unions are now gearing themselves for strikes and protests as sensitive talks on jobs and wages restart later this week.

Yet fundamental change is inevitable, according to analysts. "Little has happened to date," says Albrecht Denninghoff at HVB Equity Research. "VW announced its profits target last year and we have seen no great change. The unions rightly demand an overall plan, which we have not seen. Frankly, we are rather surprised by the way the company has behaved."

Another analyst, who asks not to be identified, adds: "VW has to move to a 35-hour week without additional pay, then it has to cut its overcapacity. It can make six million cars at its German plants but sells only five. It will need many successful models to make up the difference. I don't see it happening. It is hard to be optimistic for employees."

VW set itself the goal of achieving profits of €5.1bn in 2008. Yet this would only move it close to covering its costs. It would not make it competitive.

Patrick Juchemich, an analyst at Sal Oppenheim, an investment bank, predicts that disposals, including that of the Europcar rental group, will help offset the €1.7bn potential cost of the voluntary redundancy programme. As a result, VW's profits might rise from €1bn to €2.6bn in 2006. Yet, he warns: "The previous programme was not well received at all. This is more generous but reaction has been modest."

There are signs that the unions see the gravity of the situation. Bernd Osterloh, the head of the VW works council, is a member of the company's supervisory board. (Under German law, the supervisory board represents both investors and employees, and approves important corporate decisions.) Mr Osterloh blames management for the problems. "It is not the workforce's fault that it takes 50 hours to build the car," he said. "Competitors need half the time. The Golf is so complicated that we really cannot build it."

Mr Osterloh has said he is willing to discuss labour costs with the board. But: "I want to know what the company is going to do with the money in order to survive in the longer term." He also criticised VW for the decision to build the new Scirocco coupé in Portugal, rather than at Wolfsburg, where it would reduce excess capacity.

The relationship between capital and labour has to change, as HVB's Mr Denninghoff points out. "Is this a company that provides employment to its workforce," he asks, "or returns to shareholders?"

Yet the challenge is so great because so many jobs are threatened at once. Increasing the working week and halving the Golf's construction time will create further overcapacity, not least at Wolfsburg.

"Purely mathematically, the effects of these measures would be 30,000 job losses in Germany. But they are unlikely to see 20,000 under present circumstances," says Mr Juchemich at Sal Oppenheim.

Becoming competitive - Mr Bernhard's stated goal - suggests yet more cuts. Currently, one hour's work on the assembly line in Wolfsburg costs the company €55, compared with €40 at its competitors' plants in Germany - and just €5.50 in VW's plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Mr Denninghoff claims a competitive workforce would require 60,000 job losses, leaving VW with just 40,000 German employees, a dire prospect for the country's economy. Yet this simply reflects what is happening in the car industry."Mercedes has reduced the headcount of its Stuttgart headquarters to eight or nine thousand," he says. "There seems no reason for VW to have 25,000 people in administration at Wolfsburg."

It's something VW is apparently only too aware of. As its chief executive, Bernd Pischetsrieder, has already said: "We have 59 plants, too low turnover and too few customers."

If Wolfsburg is to be saved, it seems the unions have little choice but to start working with VW's management.

FIX: Replace all the U-joints and keep the new ones greased regularly.

WHEN: Slowing down; it's sometimes worse on damp days.
WHAT: Your brake pads are stroking the discs like a violin bow.
URGENCY: Sometimes they do that. Your brakes still work fine.
FIX: Try new pads, adhesive to hold pads to the piston or shims to insulate the piston from the pads. Another option: earplugs. (Sometimes the sound is difficult to eliminate.)

WHEN: Anytime the engine is running, but it's most noticeable at idle speed.
WHAT: Vacuum leak. A rubber or plastic vacuum line or fitting has split or fallen apart.
URGENCY: If you're wondering why your Check Engine light is on and why your car idles poorly, this is probably why.
FIX: Reconnect or replace the line.

Clang
WHERE: Under the center of the car or truck, near the middle.
WHEN: Starting off at traffic lights. Most often heard on pickups with automatic transmissions, not manuals.
WHAT: The splines that allow the driveshaft to change length where it connects to the tailshaft are binding as you slow down and then releasing when you start off.
URGENCY: Annoying, but They All Do That--or at least some of them do it some of the time.
FIX: Packing the spline area with special grease helps for a month or so. Or just sell the car or truck.

WHERE: One or both front corners of the vehicle.
WHEN: Going around slow, sharp corners under light throttle.
WHAT: A CV joint that allows your front wheels to turn and still be powered is loose. The boot has failed and let out all the CV joint's grease, or maybe it's just time for it to wear out.
URGENCY: Don't leave town. Don't use a lot of throttle around sharp turns. Your car will stop suddenly when the joint completely fails.
FIX: Replace the entire off ending half-axle.

CLUNK
WHERE: Front end.
WHEN: Initially, when parking; eventually, over small bumps.
WHAT: The ball joint that connects the suspension arm to the upright has lost its lubrication and the metal-to-metal contact is wearing it out.
URGENCY: Make an appointment. Avoid bumpy roads, curbs and potholes.
FIX: Replace the ball joint.

GrumbleGrumble
WHERE: Front of the car.
WHEN: At idle. (Check for weeping coolant at the bottom of the water pump, too.)
WHAT: Water pump bearings.
URGENCY: When the bearings fail completely, the fan will pull forward and slice a nice big smile-shaped chunk out of the radiator, making it leak profusely.
FIX: You need a new pump.

Yyyyoooooowwwwrrrrrrr
WHERE: Under the hood. WHEN: Whenever you rotate the steering wheel all the way to the left or right steering stop and hold it there.
WHAT: The pressure relief valve inside the pump is dumping excess power-steering hydraulic fluid back into the reservoir. It's supposed to do that, although maybe a little more quietly.
URGENCY: No big deal.
FIX: It's normal. Actually, you should check the level of powersteering fluid in the pump. Don't hold the wheel hard on the stop like that; it annoys pedestrians and is tough on the belt.

YEEEEeeeeeaaaaawwwppp
WHERE: Under the hood.
WHEN: Right after startup until you rev the throttle a couple of times and the rubber warms up.
WHAT: Belt squeal. A loose or glazed belt, bad tensioner or misaligned pulley.
URGENCY: Make an appointment, and don't take a long trip. This won't go away on its own--until just before the belt fails.
FIX: Check belt tension and pulley alignment; replace the belt.

FRANKFURT — Volkswagen is building the Beetle again. OK, not really, but thanks to a trendy campaign and a cute little car called the Up!, VW is set to take on the likes of Smart and Scion as early as 2010. The new mini-car is part of the company’s plan to get back to its roots, building affordable rides for the masses.

Despite its diminutive size, the concept has four seats and room for a fair amount of luggage—plus a variable interior for fitting in awkward objects. User-friendly buttons on the steering wheel are reminiscent of those on an iPod (or at least an iPod Classic), while most of the dash controls can be accessed via touch-screen.

VW will offer the Up! (we feel as ridiculous typing it as you do reading it) with two- and three-cylinder engines—an obvious result of the group’s focus on efficiency and economy. It’s claiming the mid-engine, rear-wheel drive car gets some 67 mpg, but VW is trying to raise that number even higher. Despite these claims, the company has remained vague with regard to future powerplants.

The car looks awfully similar to a Smart from the outside, with a body draped around the drivetrain and cockpit. Small overhangs and R8-style LED lights mounted up front add flair to Walter de Silva’s design. You might expect to see these on American streets—VW chairman Martin Winterkorn said today that the car will be sold in other continents, but with different features, as well as in emerging markets. —James Tate

LOS ANGELES — With NBA legend Jon Salley by his side, Volkswagen head of technical development Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg unveiled the Space Up! Blue electric-powered concept car to a large crowd here—its first in North America. Small in stature, Hackenberg warned us not to judge a book by its cover: “There is plenty of interior space for four full-size people.” Styled after the classic Samba Bus from the 1950s (a hippy favorite), this slick looking, zero-emission van is powered by an electric drive system that includes a 45-kW motor, 12 lithium-ion batteries with a total of 12 kWh, and a hydrogen fuel cell. It can be recharged via the onboard hydrogen fuel cell or an electric outlet when hydrogen isn’t available. On battery power alone, the diminutive vehicle has a range of 65 miles. The fuel cell extends that by another 155 miles. A large solar panel mounted on the roof doesn’t hurt either.

Hackenberg also showed the 2009 VW Tiguan and 2009 VW Jetta turbo-diesel. The Tiquan is a sporty yet capable crossover designed to shake up the category. “It’s the GTi of crossovers,” Hackenberg Ulrich Hackenberg. It’ll come with a robust 2.0-liter, 200-hp turbo four, a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, electromechanical power steering, an electronic parking brake and all-wheel drive. The Jetta’s two-liter clean diesel engine makes just 140 hp, but promises 35/36 combined fuel economy. —Chuck Tannert

CHICAGO — If you’ve been dreaming of some hip, new-wave version of the hippie microbus, dream on. Instead of drawing on its storied van heritage, Volkswagen said here today that it plans to implement Chrysler’s minivan architecture for a distinctly American van.

VW’s seven-passenger Routan minivan will be manufactured at Chrysler’s Ontario plant—the same line that produces the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, both of which won a 2008 Popular Mechanics Automotive Excellence Award in the versatility category.

To set the Routan apart from the twin Chryslers, it’ll get its own grille and exterior design. But more importantly, the Routan appears to have a real VW interior, meaning far more upscale materials and designs. But otherwise the Routan is very close to the Chrysler duo in terms of room, space and standard amenities. It has 32.7 cu. ft. available behind the third-row seats, plus 83 cu. ft. with the second row stowed.

The Routan will come with two Chrysler engines: a standard 3.8-liter V6 rated at 197 hp and 230 lb.-ft. of torque, combined with a six-speed automatic transmission; and an optional 4.0-liter V6 at 251 hp and 259 lb.-ft. VW says the Routan has European-style suspension, steering and driving dynamics and that prices will start below $25,000. —Jim McCraw

WASHINGTON — Fifty years ago, station wagons accounted for 15 percent of all new cars sold. Squaring off against super-sized Americruisers such as Ford’s Country Squire and Chevy’s Bel Air, Volkswagen sold its doughty little Transporter in Kombi, Microbus and Camper versions. Sure, it looked like a loaf of Wonder bread on wheels, but with as many as 21 windows and eight seats, it was the stoked choice of the homemade-granola-and-sandals crowd. Funny thing is, those old Microbuses are collectors’ items today. Today, with fuel prices spiking, Volkswagen thinks this just might be the right time for a new transporter in its lineup. But this go-round, it’s a tidy little wagon. “Station wagons are a common thread in our collective experience,” insists VW America COO Mark Barnes. More important, the Wolfsburgers know how to build a solid little hauler that’s surprisingly roomy, economical and fun to drive. Jetta wagons arrive in July with three engine choices. The base 2.5-liter inline Five brings 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque paired to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. You can step up to a 200-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged inline Four with 207 lb.-ft. of torque. But we dig the 50-state approved, 140 hp I-4 TDI diesel with 235 lb.-ft. of torque. The diesel arrives in August and will run on B5 biodiesel. No official fuel economy figures were available, but we’d guess 20 to 21 city, 28 to 29 highway for the inline Five—nd probably well north of 40 mpg for the diesel. We drove the Sportwagen near here in the rolling countryside of Virginia, at the edge the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 170-hp 2.5 SE, VW says, sprints to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. No official numbers on the Turbo, but it felt noticeably quicker, smoother and more responsive. Jetta Sportwagens all have MacPherson struts in front and independent multilink rear suspension that’s taut and supple, but not too stiff.

The Jetta’s power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is crisp, with nice on-center feel, just enough boost and a reasonably quick turn-in. It’s definitely a driver’s car, with an adjustable steering wheel, a well-placed dead pedal and firmly supportive buckets. And the brakes hauled both Jettas down repeatedly on twisty Virgina backroads, with no judder or fade. The Jetta Sportwagen is in many ways like a junior-league Audi. Visually, this is a high-quality piece—the interior and exterior panel gaps are perfect, and it has that just-short-of-luxurious feel. Bottom line: We’re impressed. Once again, Volkswagen has found a way to deliver impressive German-style performance at an affordable price. Close your eyes (although we don’t recommend it at speed) and there’s that unmistakable, rock-solid feel you get in competitive models from Ingolstadt, Munich or Stuttgart, but for much less money. You really have to turn around to realize you’re in a station wagon. But you are. Plus, it delivers 32.8 cu. ft. of cargo volume with the rear seats up. Fold them flat and there’s a whopping 66.9 cu. ft. And this puppy is classified as a compact car? Not in our book. The Sportwagen’s standard equipment list runs deep. Options include a huge Power Sliding Panoramic sunroof, a touchscreen nav system with an iPod connector or a console-mounted CD changer and a rearview camera. As yet, we won’t get “4MOTION,” VW’s all-wheel drive system. Apparently European demand is so high, we colonists will have to wait a while. Drat. At last November’s SEMA show in Vegas, Volkswagen previewed a lowered 2009 TDI Sportwagen with Brembo brakes, H&R sport springs and 19-inch alloys. It looked way cool. But the fact is, even a stock Jetta Sportwagen looks hip—especially in black. Prices start at $19,000. —Ken Gross

The new era of clean diesel in America will officially be ushered in by the new VW Jetta TDi when it goes on sale in a few months. Powered by a 2.0-liter four-banger that produces 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque, it will be the first automobile to meet the world’s most stringent emission control standards, California’s Tier II, Bin 5.

Although it won’t be wearing the “BlueTec” badge, the Jetta will be using emission-cleansing technologies developed under the cooperative formed by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen to make it 50-state legal. Most BlueTec vehicles control NOx emissions—one of the biggest environmental hurdles facing diesels, along with particulate matter—by injecting a urea-based solution into the exhaust system upstream from the catalytic converter, where NOx is then converted into nitrogen and water. The Jetta will instead use a NOx-storage catalyst, which is basically a reservoir that temporarily holds the noxious emissions, like a particulate filter, until they can be burned off during one of the engine cycles.

In addition, the new engine will feature a common-rail fuel injection system, instead of VW’s traditional mechanical system, that uses piezoelectric fuel injectors. This technology permits higher injection pressures, which better atomize the fuel and make it easier to control pollution.

We recently test drove the Jetta through the streets of San Francisco and were pleasantly surprised. The Jetta has always been agile and zippy, but the new, more powerful TDi gives it more oomph, allowing us to power through traffic and accelerate from stoplights with authority and a little bravado—we totally tooled on a Toyota Prius. We were also shocked as to how quiet the engine operates: You have to consciously listen for the knocking, or you wouldn’t even notice it.

If reports are correct, the Jetta should get upwards of 50 mpg, combined highway and city. Although pricing hasn’t been announced, expect it to be within a few thousand of the current models (an estimated $18,000 to $23,000). We can’t wait for chance to spend some more time with the new TDi Jetta—and test its real-world feul economy. —Chuck Tannert

410 Ribu VW Passat Ditarik dari Pasaran

Demi keamanan dan kenyamanan pelanggannya, pihak Volkswagen menarik varian Passat bermesin bensin yang terjual di Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1999 hingga 2005, dengan jumlah mencapai 410 ribu unit, untuk diperiksa. Mobil-mobil tersebut akan diteliti menyangkut tiga isu yang dikhawatirkan berpotensial merugikan konsumen.

Untuk varian transmisi otomatis, pihak VW akan melakukan pemeriksaan pada bagian firewall (passive fire protection) . Pihak VW mengkhawatirkan adanya kerusakan pada bagian firewall di sekitar catalytic converter. Jika ditemukan kerusakan, bagian tersebut akan dilapisi kembali.

Kemudian, untuk varian Passat dengan kapasitas mesin 1.8 liter yang dilengkapi turbo-four akan mendapatkan pemeriksaan kerusakan atau cacat produksi di bagian jalur bahan bakar. Terakhir, varian all-wheels drive Passat akan diteliti kemungkinan kerusakan pada jalur ventilasi tanki bahan bakar.

Meskipun terdapat sejumlah kemungkinan kerusakan tersebut, tapi tidak ada laporan mengenai korban luka ataupun kecelakaan akibat isu tadi. (Leftlane/GLO) ..

iCar = Apple + VW

What's the first word you would say about the title 'iCar = Apple + VW' ? I would say COOL!!! Really. The first thought in my mind is about the "fresh candy car body painting" that is SO Brilliant fresh new idea such as Apple with iMac & iBook series which famous for its colourful casing in 1998-1999. Then, at the same year (1998), New Beetle was launched by Volkswagen, designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company's California design studio.
So, related to their history, its logic to make a connection between Apple with its iBook n iMac and VW with its New Beetle.

VW recalls New Beetle Triple White for loose spoilers

Please check your roof-mounted spoiler of your '2008 Volkswagen New Beetle Triple White Special Edition'.
The automaker has issued a recall for 510 MY 2008 vehicles because an incorrect adhesive may have been used to attach the roof spoiler to the car. If that's the case, the spoiler could become loose and either fall off the car or potentially fly off it while moving and become an airborne projectile on the highway. The recall begins February 29th, and VW dealers will replace the roof spoiler, which should avoid any lawsuits from people assaulted with an aerodynamic aid.

If Microsoft Built Cars...

Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you'd have to buy a new car.
Occasionally your car would just die on the motorway for no reason, and you'd have to restart it. For some strange reason, you'd just accept this, restart and drive on.
Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail to restart and you'd have to re-install the engine. For some strange reason, you'd just accept this too.
Apple would make a car that was powered by the sun, was twice as reliable, five times as fast, twice as easy to drive--but most people wouldn't know it or believe it.
Apple car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars which would make their cars go much slower.
The oil, engine, gas and alternator warning lights would be replaced with a single "General Car Fault" warning light.
People would get excited about the "new" features in Microsoft cars, not knowing that they had been available in Apple's cars for many years.
Microsoft cars would come with 5-year-old Apple car paint jobs, but they'd be the same crappy Microsoft car underneath.
The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.
If you were involved in a crash, you'd have no idea what happened.Hahhhaaa...

1934 - The idea of the Beetle was born on January 17 1934, when Ferdinand Porsche wrote his ‘Exposé of a German People’s Car’. A people’s car or ‘Volkswagen’ should, he said, be fully adequate and reliable with light construction. It should offer room for four people, reach speeds of up to 100 km/h and be able to overcome gradients of 30 per cent.
1936 - The first prototype was completed on February 5 1936.
1945 - Mass production of the Beetle began in December 1945.
1947 - First exports started in August.
1949 - The first convertible Beetle. Production began to soar.
1950 - The 100,000th Beetle rolled off the line.
1955 - The millionth Beetle.

1967 – Major upgrade including improved clutch, braking system, and rear axles. New standard equipment includes two-speed windshield wipers, back-up lights, sealed-beam headlights and a driver side exterior mirror.
1972 - February 17 1972 the 15,007,034th Beetle made this car a world champion, overtaking the previous production record held by the Ford Model T
1981 – 20 millionth Beetle rolled off the Mexican production line
1998 - Launch of new Beetle. Earlier models up to 2005 used GL, GLS and GLX designations to reflect the various trim levels and the base engine was a 115-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder. A 100-hp 1.9-liter Turbo Direct Injection TDI was also offered until the end of 2006.
1999 – Until 2006 the New Beetle 1.8T was powered by a 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder -150 hp.

Its high torque rating—170 lb.-ft. at 3,750 rpm—makes it better suited to 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission than the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder it replaced. The New Beetle is also available with a 5-speed manual.
2007 - A million sales of the new Beetle cars are expected to be reached in 2007. The New Beetle also adds colour choices. Diesel-powered TDI has been dropped.

Quick Summary
Not Recommended. It's almost impossible to believe this car was once the height of cool. Desperately dated and dynamically indifferent.

Full Road Test

The current Beetle stands as a dire warning to car designers about the risk of excessively retro and twee design. Once the height of cool, the image it projects is now one of mild desperation.

And there's not much under the Beetle's styling to strengthen its case, either. It's

based on the same set of mechanical underpinnings as the previous generation Volkswagen Golf - which went out of production in 2003 - and the Beetle drives indifferently and suffers from a tight-fitting cabin.

Despite sharing superficially similar looks to the original (or "proper") Beetle, this one is considerably larger and has its engine mounted at the front rather than the rear. The cartoonish exterior design certainly has its admirers and the Beetle seems perennially popular with middle-aged female divorcees, but for most the joke has long since faded.

The interior also feels a bit like entering a mid 1990s timewarp, with lots of outdated previous generation Volkswagen corporate switchgear on show (and the distinctly ridiculous dashboard mounted flower pot), and although there's plenty of room for front seat occupants the Beetle is tight and claustrophobic in the back.

On the road it drives very much like a slightly sloppier version of the dynamically indifferent Mk4 Golf: lots of body roll, limited front end grip and a crashy ride over rougher road surfaces. Buyers have lots of engines to choose between, with 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrols, a 1.8 turbo petrol and a very old school 1.9 litre TDI turbo diesel. Of these the 1.6 petrol is the engine to, if not exactly go for, then to avoid least, as it gives the Beetle as much pace as the vast majority of buyers would ever want.

Mike's 1974 Super Beetle

Just after my son Andrew turned 11 years old we where out for a pleasure drive and came across a 1974 Super Beetle that was for sale. After inspecting the car and going for a test drive, I bought it! The Beetle was painted Marina blue with gray interior and still has its original floor pans and interior. There's no sign of any rust in the car anywhere! I have had new seals put in the engine and have also installed new wheel bearings. The Bug was painted about 3 1/2 years ago and a new updated stereo system was installed. I have recently purchased a new set of the original chrome slotted wheels and VW hubcaps and plan to put them back on the car. This Super Beetle has only 56,000 miles showing on the odometer when I purchased it and shows in mint condition. My son claims the car as his and only being 12 years old hopes that by the time that he is 16 years old he too will drive this Beetle back and forth to school as both of his parents have done.

The VW Beetle is one of the best-loved of all classic cars, with many thousands preserved across the world, many in regular use. Over the years countless changes were introduced, together making a mid sixties Beetle, for instance, very different from one built in the mid-50s, or mid-70s, despite the obvious similarities. With the aid of hundreds of full color photographs this book documents all the Beetles specification changes and model differences during the classic period 1949-67, making it possible to determine the original specification and fittings of any Beetle from this period.

Overview
The VW Beetle is the world?s bestselling single design car, in so much as that it?s original design remains unchanged to this day. It?s also the first car to reach over twenty million sales. Much of the affection for the Beetle is due its distinctive rounded shape which was instrumental in injecting personality into car design in a big way. It is quite possibly the most easily recognised car in the history of car production; rightly regarded as a design classic. Notably, the term Beetle appears nowhere on the vehicle although a Beetle is still instantly recognised as a Beetle everywhere.
Old VW Beetle
The Volkswagen Type 1 or original VW Beetle was an economy vehicle produced by Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003. Although quickly becoming known as the Beetle or Bug car due to its distinctive rounded back Volkswagen only began using the name Beetle officially from 1967. The older cars have a classic status about them and are still affectionately restored. Well maintained older models are highly sought after. Although not known especially for its power, handling or comfort it remained a best seller for more than half a century, one of the most successful cars of all time. The old VW Beetles have a reputation for running indefinitely if occasionally patched up. Old Beetles are rear engine, air-cooled. After a surge of popularity during the post-war period, Beetles enjoyed a revival in the sixties when they were much admired for their individual styling and became associated with flower power. A Beetle notably appears on the cover of The Beatles album Abbey Road and they also appear in numerous swinging sixties films including The Love Bug. If you are seeking a sixties model, The Volkswagen Beetles post 1967 are of interest. The car was significantly upgraded with Hp increased from 50 to 53 hp, and further electrical upgrades from a 6 volt to a 12 volt system. The old Beetle was not only sold almost everywhere, it was also produced in 20 countries, including Germany, Belgium, Singapore, Nigeria and Peru. The New Beetle, in both hatchback and Cabriolet guise, is also selling well for VW.
New VW Beetle
Following positive reaction to the new Beetle concept car at the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen moved the New Beetle into production and launched in 1998. Volkswagen designers at the companys California studio preserved the old Beetle look but with an added futuristic twist. The new Beetles are assembled at the VW Puebla factory in Mexico and are similar only in name and appearance to the old one. The New Beetles draw heavily on the design of the original Beetle but are also based technically on the Mark 4 Volkswagen Golf. The main difference between the new and old is that, like most cars, the New Beetle has the engine in the front and storage in the back. There is also a new Beetle convertible or Cabrio which maintains the famous curved roofline. The VW New Beetle is situated in the compact car market and achieves a high 4 stars in the EuroNCAP rating. Beetle insurance groups start at group 5 and rise to group 13.
New VW Beetle Spec
The Volkswagen New Beetle is available as a two-door hatchback or a two-door convertible. The New Beetle has plenty of standard equipment, including air-conditioning, cruise control, heated mirrors. A 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine model offers 150 hp. Traction control, stability control, five-speed manual transmission are standard. A six-speed automatic is optional. The convertible comes with a manual-folding top and a glass rear window as standard. A power top is available as an option. Front seats are roomy but the rear seats are cramped.

VOLKSWAGEN NEW BEETLE 2006

The incessant product buzz at the North American International Auto Show in 1994 centered on the concept car from Volkswagen that redefined the classic Beetle. The overall shape and the dash-mounted bud vase, though, were about the only elements that were like the original. After all, the original was an air-cooled boxer 4-cylinder, rear-engine people’s car, built as simply and dependably as possible to be sold cheaply. The New Beetle was a transverse mounted front-engine, water-cooled, inline-four, nicely trimmed, fully featured and priced well above the bottom feeders. It was a hit at the show and still a hit when it came to market in 1998.

The original Beetle was an icon, to be sure. It was quirky, functional and enduring. Iconic design, by its nature, usually engenders some measure of controversy, and the Beetle did. After all, if everyone likes a design it’s likely to be too ‘white-bread’ and therefore not iconic. I do not recall hearing anyone criticize the New Beetle concept at the ’94 auto show and, although it merely hints at the original, it has turned out to be a universally popular design. It could only pretend to be the Beetle. Hence, I suppose, the necessary moniker “New” Beetle.
I recall the first production New Beetle I saw on the freeway near downtown Detroit. From a distance it had the profile of a Porsche. More than just cute, it was charming and classic in design and execution. Now in its eighth model year, the New Beetle has been freshened a bit with a new engine and it still looks cool. After spending a week with a nice little silver one, however, I’m wondering how much longer it can last.
My first impression was of driving a small truck, partly because of the great distance from the generous driver’s position to the base of the windshield. The massively broad dash combines with the slope of the bonnet to make it difficult to see where the front ends. I’m a fellow of notable girth but there was room to spare in the cockpit. That truck-like feeling dissipated quickly, though, as I got acclimated to driving the car. Having had considerable experience with the original Beetle I can attest that they are very different cars. The new one has virtually none of the quirkiness that we loved in the old one.
The New Beetle is on the respected Golf platform. With independent suspension front and rear the ride and handling are as competent and sporty as we would expect from that base car. It was a bit harsh, though, on our notorious railroad crossing where we regularly test suspension dynamics. It is certainly one of the harshest performers we’ve had recently on that test. Otherwise I found it a fine ride.
Performance was good. On hard acceleration it was not buzzy or busy. The 2.5-litre 5-cylinder, multi-valve, 150-horsepower engine, new for 2006, was smooth and got me up to speed and onto the freeway with time, speed and power to spare. The 170 lb.ft. of torque was evident through the basic 5-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission. The quick-shifting 6-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) automatic stick shift, one of the best in the industry, is available.
Interior design, while interesting to look at, is just a hint at the abovementioned quirkiness. Attractive round shapes and good quality materials make the inside of the New Beetle a pleasant place to spend time. I found some of the controls to be a bit awkward, particularly the power window and mirror controls mounted in the door.
My test car came during a week with lots of rain, ice and snow. Salted roads make for sloppy driving and ill-tempered windshield wipers don’t help. The wipers on my car tended to stop and start according to some plan of their own, not by my commands. They had a mind of their own, as my mother would say.
Packing camera gear and luggage to cover the Detroit auto show pretty much filled the cargo area and most of the back seat. The rear hatch needed a good slam to close fully. If it’s spatial efficiency you’re after you might want to consider the square-backed Golf, but the New Beetle is adequate for most purposes.
And speaking of packaging, that engine is packed very nicely into the front. It is designed to contribute to excellent crashworthiness as well. The New Beetle has four-wheel disc brakes, stability control, lots of air bags front and side, and active front head restraints – a very safe vehicle for its class.
The New Beetle comes with either this new 5-cylinder engine or, for about $1200 more, the super-efficient TDI turbo-diesel. Fuel mileage for the gasoline-engine car is rated at 31 highway and 22 city. The diesel is 44/37. With a 14.5-gallon tank it has an admirable cruising range with either power source.
Warranty coverage is 4 years/50,000 miles and 5 years/60,000 miles on the powertrain. A 12-year unlimited mileage plan covers body rust through.
Prices for the New Beetle start at $17,180, the convertible $22,120. Standard on both are 16-inch all-weather tires on alloy wheels and full-size spare; air conditioning; cruise control; in-dash single CD player/radio with MP3 format capability, satellite radio preparation, 6 speakers, control capability for CD changer; ABS, Anti-Slip Regulation (traction control) and Engine Braking Assist to prevent compression-induced skidding in slippery conditions; 5-speed manual transmission.
Cute, fun and efficient, now nine model years old, the New Beetle is well equipped and a good buy, in my book. The convertible is pricier but still a bargain as convertibles go. Take a look and a test drive. But don’t expect it to resemble the old Beetle in anything but ambiance.

The original Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most iconic cars of all time, famous for being the product of a particular period of German history. Adopted by peace activists in the sixties it also starred in a range of Disney films as a never-say-die race car. Volkswagen’s second incarnation is a different beast. It’s bigger, bolder, more solid and with the engine positioned in the front instead of the rear. But it preserves the cuteness of its multi-million selling predecessor and even retains the diminutive vase by the steering wheel – keeping the free loving symbol of the sixties alive. We borrowed a Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet for a week to see what it was like.
Looks
There aren’t many cuter-looking cars on the market than the Volkswagen Beetle with its roof down. The flared wheel arches house a set of funky 16-inch alloys with the elliptical front and rear lights staring back at you. When driving the Beetle we received some interesting looks from male drivers expecting to see a lady behind the wheel.

One drive in this definition-defying New Beetle, and you'll be ruined for life. Everything you once considered really quick-Corvette, 911 Carrera, M5/Z8, or XKR-will be handily outrun by an HPA Motorsports GT6 Beetle. Go ahead and laugh. The only exotica out there that can touch it are a 911 Turbo, Viper, or a Ferrari 360 Modena. You think we're kidding? Do 500 hp and all-wheel drive change your mind? How about a mere $65,000 pricetag? Interested yet? It's also serviceable at any VW dealership and warranted by its Canadian builder, HPA Motorsports of Langley, British Columbia, for a year on parts and six months on workmanship. HPA's never had to oblige a customer yet, and you know how the buyer of this type of car is likely

to drive it. More amazingly, it's built from all factory VW/Audi OE parts-just put together in a different configuration. "No way!" Yes-way. In fact, so many VW/Audi parts are interchangeable among variants of VW's "A-platform" that, according to HPA, an all-wheel-drive twin-turbo V-6 conversion can be performed on any current-model Beetle, Jetta, Golf/GTI, or Audi TT. Doesn't that send your mind reeling? The Beetle requires the most work, because its engine bay is the smallest, and the floorpan needs to be swapped out to accommodate the driveshaft and rearend. Sadly, you can't get a Beetle with a (VW 4-Motion or Audi quattro) Haldex all-wheel-drive system from VW. The solution is found in its platformmate, the Audi TT quattro. According to HPA's thoroughly hospitable president, Marcel Horn, the operation sounds far more invasive than it really is. Total time to make the floorpan transplant, including adding in the all-wheel-drive pieces, is about 80 hours. And in case you suspect a TT driveline can't handle 500 horses, HPA has confirmed Audi AG's testing of it up to 800 hp without failure. Yes, it's that hardy, and the 34 brutal acceleration launches we made in this Beetle (in one morning!) made us believers.Again, you can't get a Beetle with a V-6-yet. It takes HPA an additional 16 hours to install a 2.8LV-6 engine in a Beetle (either a Euro-spec 204-hp/ 24-valver as this car has or U.S.-spec 174-hp/12-valve VR6) and two KKK turbos good for an additional 304 hp, bringing the total to an amazing 508 hp. Of course, those giant wheels (Porsche Turbo 993-spec) can't possibly fit under the stock Beetle's fenders, so HPA installed a subtle Dietrich Wide Body Cup Kit, as seen on Beetle Cup racers. The other major body mod is a Kersher carbon-fiber wing. Rounding out this tester are KW adjustable coil-over Competition suspension upgrades front and rear, proprietary HPA/HGP reprogrammed Bosch Motronic ECU with port fuel injection, VW Motorsport/Sachs race clutch, HPA/HGP 3-in.-diameter T-304 stainless-steel exhaust, a paint job, matching rollbar, and a gauge package. The best part is the use of so much factory stuff that already bolts together, speaks the same electro-mechanical language, and looks right-because it is right.

Ternyata dari hasil chatting ditemukan kebetulan yg aneh, wah, baru kali ini gue ngejlimet dalam suatu hubungan, Biasanya gw ga' mau terlalu intense to get to know the one who near to me. Males aja, mungkin dari awal hubungan gw yg sebelumnya gw tau klo sesuatu yg sedang in progress itu ga' bakalan berhasil, klo yg sekarang kaya'nya ya gw jalanin n ada 'sedikit' tekad buat serius, klo pun gagal gw bisa ngebuktiin klo gw tu emang anomali aja, klo lancar aman terkendali ya berarti orangtua merestui jalan gw dan Tuhan juga telah memberikan petunjukNya buat gue. Mmm.. padahal waktu pelajaran mekflu, statistik dan risk analysis para dosen sering bilang klo kecelakaan di udara itu 1:10.000 (hahhh...) cuman ga' inget sih teori kemungkinan itu apa kecelakaan akibat desain pesawat atau .... Pesawat Garuda Terbakar dan Terbelah di Bandara Adisucipto

YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS – Pesawat Boeing 737 seri 400 Garuda Indonesia dengan nomor penerbangan GA 200 dari Jakarta menuju Yogyakarta, terbakar di Bandara Adisucioto, Yogyakarta, Rabu (7/3) pukul 06.50. Pesawat itu terbakar sesaat setelah mendarat di landasan di bandara tersebut.

Wartawan Kompas, Hariadi Saptono yang berada di Bandara Adisucipto dan hendak berangkat ke Jakarta menyaksikan kejadian tersebut sejak roda pesawat menyentuh landasan. Ia menyaksikan pesawat terhentak ketika roda menyentuh landasan dari arah barat.

Setelah itu, ketika pesawat mencapai 1/3 landasan tiba-tiba tampak api keluar dari bagian roda pesawat. Bahkan setelah pesawat mencapai sekitar 2/3 landasan, api membesar. Badan pesawat kemudian meluncur keluar landasan hingga sekitar 300 meter dari ujung landasan.

Dari kejadian tersebut, kedua mesin pesawat tampak lepas dan tertinggal sekitar 25 meter dari badan pesawat. Dari badan pesawat tersebut, tampak yang tersisa hanya bagian ekor pesawat.

Para penumpang dan pengantar maupun penunggu di bandara, tampak panik, banyak yang menbangis menyaksikan kecelakaan tersebut. Belum diperoleh laporan adanya korban dalam musibah tersebut.

Pesawat Terbelah

Kondisi pesawat terlihat sangat mengenaskan. Badan pesawat terbelah memanjang dari bagian kabin pilot hingga ke ekor pesawat. Sementara salah satu sayap pecah dan terbelah, dengan posisi turbo pesawat terlepas.

Posisi pesawat pun sudah menyimpang dari landas pacu bandara bandara Adi Sucipto, di areal persawahan sebelah timur landas pacu. Sejumlah wartawan saat ini dihalau keluar dari garis polisi, setelah sebelumnya sempat bisa mendekat ke badan pesawat. (wer)

Last nite, we spent long distance calling. He asked me again about our or maybe how much serious am I in this relationship. I didn't answer it, that's just silly question. He plainly said he was about 50:50. Hahaha... !!. Kalo misalnya dia bertemu dengan org yg lebih baik dan kejelasan ma kepastian hubungan ini ga ada, ya udah dia akan bersama org itu dan dia jg berharap atau mengijinkan gw tuk berbuat yg sama. (dihh... is he reading my mind? or my close friend who suggest me that). Dia cerita klo dulu... lebih ke ketertarikan fisik, namun sekarang dah beda lebih ke karakter dan kepribadian (rumah pribadi... de el el... ngga' tau lah yaww). Gw cerita jg ttg pengalaman gw naksir cwo keren (tiga2nya nama panggilannya R hehehe, ternyata 2 diantaranya grogian, ngga lucu, sok cool (sok cool sama really cool itu beda!), rada ga nyambung (tau sapa yg jaim) terus satunya lain suku yg satu ngerasa banget klo dia ganteng (hiks.. males deh gue.. klo ganteng tapi gagu siapa jg yg mau?? ada sih cwe yg lbh agresif hihihii...). klo yg terakhir tuh kebalikannya selain itu beda suku, brondong, playboy (wahhh.. tp emang cute kaya' artis sinetron berinisial H? yg mantannya masayu) dan selain itu dia jg anak buahnya stupin n silly ass. mgr yg ga gw suka karena ga bermoral (dia lagaknya jg dah mulai ky bosnya hihhhhh).

Several days ago, I posted a journal about his absent. Nowadays both of us kindly report our update news, after we ‘break up or blank no news..’ for several days, I sent him a message that I would sent him sms just to make sure he won’t forget me (hehehee..), abis gw pusing gmn mo nunjukin ke dia ttg perhatian gw. Secara gw dah mati angin, never have kinda special relationship since high school, sometimes I felt kinda sorry for spending my time waiting in vain, padahal klo gw mau atw ga usah ngebandingin apa yg ada dengan si iceberg itu kayanya dunia gw bakal lebih bwarna, tapi emang takdir gw kok jd a loyalty lady hehehe.. (*narsis mode on*). Gile dah, sekarang gw dah ga inget ma iceberg, cm selintas aja ky reklame di bis gitu deh, ngga too much wishing lagi, hmm… but I’m still don’t know how to express my feeling, as I’m not that kind of warm n sensitive caring people. My parents felt that I’m a solitaire kinda person, I couldn’t express that I love them n care about them. Is it categorized as BAD?? How she is warm n caring, I can’t be that person. What I am?. Some of my friends thought that I’m too damn perfectionist for being in looking for husband material, such as good personality incl. personal properties such as wealthy, physically n that must be A list matters in common. I’m not material girl/woman. I’m NOT!. I just want my freedom, I hate being 24hr/day 7days/week 12month/year 365days/year being watch by the one who love me. NOT that much, I don’t need that much n complicated invisible spider’s web he strings around me. I don’t like to be tied that heavy. Ternyata dia bales gw, klo dia jg ga keberatan klo gw off krn kesibukan gw, *hah.. masa sih, soalnya dulu dia pernah panic gitu gara-gara gua lagi flu berat shg ga bales n jawab telp nya*. Perlahan-lahan dia mulai berubah nih, tapi beberapa hari kemudian dia tetep mellow lagi. Huuu… he asked me whether I’m really like him n that I don’t get bored for this long distance relationship. Oh no, apa dia butuh perhatian yg lebih? Si Brooklyn aja yg beda species aja klo kangen ma gw sampe’ menjijikkan gitu (kemana-mana ngikutin gua, ndusel2 ga karuan, menatap dengan matanya yg besar full pupil mode on… meski Cuma merayu minta makan friskies!). so compare to him, the one who has feeling n brain, its possible he wants more. But, my bro as other comparison, told me that he never been kissed with his gf. Hahahhaa… what a journal. I don’t mean that I need that or want that (now, that it was restricted in my religion), but several people who make this close relationship must be want more attention about showing off more evidence of the feeling.

Gw nanya aja gimana hari2nya tanpa gw (maksudnya sms n telp gw lagi masalah selama beberapa hari). Dia bilang klo dia lg mules, biasa skt perut. Mungkin tidurnya kemaleman atw dia lg stress. Kemudian dia mulai berbunga-bunga lagi, bilang klo gw lagi pergi sendirian ke tempat yg romantis tanpa dirinya, ga usah merasa sedih, karena hatinya ada padaku. Maksud lo?? Hahaha..

Terus dia cerita soal kepindahan kantornya ke kota kecil nun jauh disana tapi asyiknya kantornya deket ma rel kereta dan tower bts, jadinya fren jelasss banget, hubungannya ma rel kereta apa ya?? .. dia agak bete sih karena kerjaannya terasa membosankan, gw bilang aja klo bosen sekalian aja buka sewaan ps atau apa kek biar displaynya ga’ sia-sia. Hahaha.. dia malah mengucapkan terimakasih atas kedodolan dan asbun opinion gw, dia bilang jd cwo gw bikin smua masalahnya ringan (ya iyalah ngapain dibawa mikir tlalu dalem, klo dah ga cocok ya wis tinggalin aja. Klo tetep stuck in the problem ntar malah sakit ndiri ga sebanding ma gaji yang diterima). Ternyata perhatian n saran gokil dia bisa bikin hidupnya lebih berharga, sama jg dengan cara bertindaknya yg proaktif ke ortu gw meski cm sekali jg buat gw ngerasa dia ga maen2. Tp banyak kok cwo yg ga maen2 ma gw, krn gw angelic narcist hahaha.. Waktu gw nelpon bwt nanya persiapan kepindahannya ternyata dia gi makan ma sohibnya, gw ngerasa rikuh aja abis dulu gw kan pendiam n pasif banget dalam hubungan social makanya ditolak mentah-mentah jadi anak IPS kekekkkkeekkk.. dia bilang klo pengen “I just want to say I lv U” tapi ga enak karena ada temennya itu… hijjhh dasar tukang bikin ge er. Mayan buat bunga tidur.. keesokan sorenya dia nelpon (akhirnya dia nelpon selagi dia masih kerja) buat ngilangin kantuk ,, tuh kan manjur kan resep biar ga ngantuk adalah nge-blog, chatting, liat fs dan check milis atw browsing blog org… selain itu bisa jg nelpon orang yg deket ma kita. Dijamin bablas ngantuknya. Abis itu gw telp n dia gi happy. Mmmm… lets its flow…

Gue yg terbiasa dengan kesendirian, akhirnya merasa 'bodoh' karena kehadirannya, secara gue tuh 'sebenarnya' adalah orang yang teratur, cuma ga bisa memanage dengan baik waktu yang ada. xixixixiii. Nah, balik lagi ke kebodohan gue, biasanya nih dia rutin sms ga penting or nelp gue, karena ortunya baru dateng gitu dech ya bisa dibilang sibuk lahh, tapi kok ga ada kabar sama sekali, sebelumnya sih dia dah blg klo pulsanya cekak tinggal goceng itu juga klo abis, dia bakal nunggu akhir bulan sampe gajian br isi pulsa. Hiks, padahal gue masih ga yakin gitu sama dia, trus kenapa gue jadi meradang gini karenanya.... BODOH, BAKA-NE!!. Dari awal dia jg dah ngingetin klo dia tuh ga teratur, posesif, cerewet, manja, pesimistis, deep thinker (semuanya antidot gue). Tapi dia sama malesnya n too phylosophis gitu deh, mirip dikit ma gue tapi gue cm suka ngoceh ga jelas buat nenangin pikiran gue n nyari pembenaran buat kekesalan n kekecewaan gue, sementara dia berfilsuf karena otaknya dah mau meledak karena sisi idealisnya diinjak oleh realita yg ada. Kira-kira udah 3 mingguan ini, gue kaya' orang gila. Suka nyengir sendirian (sebenernya sih dr dulu jg gitu... cuma sekarang lebih akut). Terus kita ngobrol ga penting, tau deh.. gue tuh paling ancur klo urusan berkomunikasi secara verbal *gwakkakkakk*. Kata nyokap gue, otak gue udah mikir entah kemana sedang materi pembicaraan yg mo keluar baru nyampe ujung kata, jadi kaya VoIP ada jeda antara penyampaian suara karena datanya diubah dulu dari data digital ke suara. (ini rada ngawur.. tapi intinya gitu deh utk th 2006 ini, siapa tau teknologi ini akan terus berkembang ..ya ga'). Jadi tepatnya tanggal 18 Des kemaren kita jadian lewat 1st date gitu deh, sebelumnya sabtu sore dia datang ke rumah, just in case I’d lie to him, makanya kopdar dulu lah. Kesan gue dia ga’ berubah dari jadul waktu kita sempat sekelas, mungkin tambah gemuk dikit (ga’ ngerti lah) dan pastinya tampangnya makin dewasa meski masih imut – yg gue inget adalah senyumnya yg malu-malu klo 'caught in the act' lagi jalan ma cwe'nya yg oriental (gue dulu pernah denger dr cwo2 di kelas elektro -gue cewek sendiri di kelas itu- klo punya cwe yg rambutnya panjang sepinggang itu asyekk.. bisa .... sampe' situ ) Hihihii.. dasar!.
Terus, karena jam kerjanya yg ga' jelas itu, kita baru bisa ketemuan pas hari senin (setelah berkali-kali dihadang dan didera hujan petir bla..bla..bla..), tadinya gue mokeluar jam 1 siang, trus ujan, batal, eh dia mastiin mo jadi pergi apa ngga' ya udah dia nelpon ke rumah, yg nerima nyokap, trus pake acara nebeng dengerin point meeting kami dimana lagi. Duhh!! malu bo'. Ehmm.. trus ketemuan di Gramed then had dinner di waroeng steak, hihiii, mana pas mati listrik jadinya pake candle light dinner gitu deh. Gila!! Ancur dech, tadinya klo gue ga jaim, pastinya gue dah ngakak edan-edanan palagi klo jalan ma mr. partner in crime gue. Abis takut dia jantungan klo akhirnya dia tau klo sesungguhnya dia have a date with guy not girl next door as my appeareance. Kemudian kemaren pagi, dia ngingetin by sms klo tgl 18 ini tepat sebulan kita berjumpa. Idihh.. moment reminder bangedd. Tapi kok dia suka lagunya Jewel - Foolish Game yah?

This song is about a girl who is deeply infauated or in love with a guy. But unfortunately, he's cold and callaus to how she feels. He plays games with her head (it could be anything, but my guess is by being there and warm and saying how much he loves her, and the next minute gone, not be found until he chooses to be with her again.) She realises that he's being so cruel to her, but she still wants him. Why? i miss YK-town for its culture n beautiful scene also m family in it.
i miss BdG-town, miss everything about it especially foods n FO (wait.. missy shopaholic).
i miss M-town 'cause someone in it (i don't know where he's @ right now). i miss my life on it (even boring).
i always miss JaK-city, like NYC without the bad habit of the commuter...yess the city never sleep.

In Big City like JaKtown -- it mean traffic jam n traffic itself ( drugs, child abuse n s**workers under age from village n other country such as Russia, Thai, China n Phill. ) Oh My God, you can find them (local wh**e) along Jt train station, they looks so young innocent .

I love cats - pets such as Dogs, birds and guinea pig ..... but as moslem dogs are forbidden for us except we had a 100 acres of land.
My black cat was Tammy, she's gone now. She's not good handling her kittens, which made my sisters getting mad.
My yellow-white cat was Brandals... he's still naughty, he's so cute while sleeping. He likes to follow my mum while gardening.
The last one was my sketch about my old legendary cat, he was Guk-guk... what a rare name... yeahh... its kinda i'm looking for dog but surely m parents won't agree to give me one. So I decide to call him Guk-guk --- like d sound of barking dogs. He's so... naughty & clever. He liked sail catfish on my lil pool @ d backyard. M parents still curious by the way he did.

Weekend report:
;) last sat. morning, wake up early in the morning around 5 o'clock. I usually wake up late ~ around 2pm (haaaaaaaaa.....#@??)
then I went to BCity " the coolest city " - Weather, Fashion, People, Art n Food - 'Braunsweig twin sister city plan'
I plan to go by train....but I was late, next schedule was 8.20 so I use my plan B by bus.. @ 7o'clock the bus arrived, unfortunately the highway still closed for maintenance. Around 9.15 I'm arrived. Shopping snack n several gift from food stall near bus station. At 10 o'clock I felt hungry, so I decided to get some food -empek"- @ S'kL0a. The last time I remember it felt delicious but now I felt too sweet n no cucumber slices to reduce the sweet. Hmmmm....I'm thirsty for buying things...
so I went to M"..Boutique buy some shirts n scarf.
@ 1 pm I left the shop n went to my cousin's house
I guess he's mad @ me 'cos I said I'd arrived @11am but in real I just came in @ 1.15pm heheheheee my shopaholic addicted. Hehehheee ;)
Frankly, he wait for me to eat lunch together. so he's been hungry that time. :< ... my fault but i don't feel guilty.... (hmmmm??) Then my aunty wake up, she's so surprised seeing me there... after these 3 years has gone without any news (aha?) she's so hungry like my cousin ( i guess she's waiting 4 me ... hehehe) before eat lunch, we pray Dhuhur first. After several chitchat, we separate n take a rest in our room. I got a room upstair near to my oldie room when I was student in college. @4.50pm i pray Ashar. but before that I took a bath first (it's really cold here at night) i feel tired, so I take a nap until 6.15pm. @6.20 i wake up, my nanny ask me to pray Maghrib downstair with all family member. ....waiting for dinner invitation..... @7.20 my another cousin arrived. She came with her husband and his sister in law and her 2 daughters. What a beautiful family. No long chit chat, then we left the house. Have dinner @ Sierra Cafe in top of DAgo Pakar Hills up from Btown around 9.15 we left cafe ( the prices of cuisine ~ my pocket , good recomendation. Nice views of cityscapes from above). then we went to my sis's house. No change @ all. Just like b4 when I left that house 4years ago. My aunty's house got so much changes in interior and exterior. Now it feels more open wide n shinny not like those several four years ago like haunted house. Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii........... @10 o'clock we back home to my aunty's house. Then pray Isya' b4 sleeping. After several movie, gossip n soap opera's review -chitchat- I went upstair back to my room @ 11 o'clock. Hmmmmmmmm... the atmosphere's so...cold. I got flu....temperature difference allergy. Next Day....(Day 2 - Sunday) @3.15 my sis JQ at JTown send a message about my other aunty getting in hospital. She asked me to accompany her to take care her mom. Hmmm ... bad communication in a family. I already told her bro n sis about my weekend plan. Then I fell asleep soon. Around 5.30am I wake up. I felt sick. Flu. So I spill "refagan" to reduce the problem. I fell asleep again. Mmmm...I wanna p".... So I'm really wake up @9am. Playing with cat while waiting for empty bathroom. I'll already dress up @10am, having brunch w/ my aunty n sis in law. @11am B-my cousin and his wife went to Karisma - a weekly dialogue about religious issues. Bored with television programs. so I moved to garage, playing games with my 4years old nephew ,Alan, who really hyperactive n funny. He got ashtma, so he shouldn't be so exhausted. He cough after playing football with me then he drink water to make it better. His grandmother comes out n said " Alan, get dress. Mrs. D will arrived soon. Don't be long, we won't waiting for you. " Then he run to his room n shout to his nanny to help him get dress. I start laughing loud for his funny action. 15 minutes later (12.15pm) my sis cames up. So we left the house n start to go to AllAboutStrawberry @C'hJuAn9. Around Dhuhur we take a rest to pray @A'a mosque near to d location. @1pm we had lunch @ A'A'S cafe. Ticket price 5000IDR plus a cup of strawberry juice for free. The food n beverages so ... delicious. Maybe the atmosphere makes me feel so hungry all the time .... The playground had attractive games to play for kids only. Dragon fly - like home alone 3. Rakit, Rumah Pohon - Tree/Wood House. My aunty had vertigo, so we planned to back home @3pm, we miss the strawberry garden trekking. Poops... time goes faster.... goodbye Btown. 6pm precise, I left my aunty's house to back to JTown, by train. ....The train schedule 7.10pm. So I had 30minutes left I run to KS bakery to buy BananaCheese & Chocolate Molen.. a favorite gift from this city. then I bought QED comic. I like the story, romantic comedy thriller detective story. At the train, 5D 3rd cabin. I sat near a guy who busy with his walkman. Man, it's iPod time you're just run out time! So I' m busy reading my comic n send sms with my brother n call my mom to tell the whole story about my weekend. She's so happy to hear me telling her my story. Because I'm not so easy to talk. @10.10pm I'm arrived JTown. The noise of the city never sleep runs through my eyes.......... I miss this city too... even sometimes makes me sick for its traffic jam and flood. My brother pick me up late, he pick the wrong way to get train station so he take a long road to get here. When I arrive home, the house feel empty. My brother with his father's friends from Bgr-TheRainyTown watch Italian League at TV7. I'm hungry, he offered me Fried Kwetiau. He asked me why I spent my weekend @ BTown. I answer it not too seriously. I said I had promised to see my sis after she back home from Mecca. Then I'm sleeping........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......end of story

US govt criticises companies for compliance with China

The US Congressional Human Rights Caucus held a briefing yesterday to discuss the issue of human rights and the internet in China. Particular criticism fell on US corporations - namely Microsoft, Yahoo and Google - which have cooperated with the country's internet censorship. The politicians who comprise the Caucus accused the companies of placing economic benefits over human rights such as freedom of expression. The companies were invited to take part in the briefing, though none attended.

The Caucus believes that the recent economic relationship, including the growth of the internet and other technologies, between the US and China could lead to more political openness and freedom of expression in China. The Caucus is concerned, though, that these US corporations are inhibiting these developments by complying with China's censorship. Representative Tom Lantos put it more strongly: 'They caved in to Beijing's demands for the sake of profits.'

Microsoft and Yahoo, the Caucus said, have shut down journalists' blogs at the request of the Chinese government. Yahoo also last year disclosed information about Chinese journalist Shi Tao which led to his arrest and a 10-year prison sentence.

Most recently, Google launched its China portal, which complies with China's internet censorship regulations. Searches for 'democracy', 'human rights' and 'Tiananmen Square', for example, bring heavily censored results.

Following the briefing, in which Rep. Lantos said the companies should be 'ashamed' for not sending representatives, Microsoft and Yahoo issued a joint statement to the Caucus. The companies expressed concern for internet censorship in China and assured the Caucus that they did not consider their compliance in China to be 'business-as-usual', but the unfortunate starting block from which they could make reforms. The companies also suggested that the problem would be most effectively solved not by corporations, but by the governments of the US and China.

The Caucus will hold another meeting on this topic on 15 February. Microsoft, Yahoo and Google have said they plan to attend.

Politicians on Wednesday attacked Cisco, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! for declining to appear at a briefing about China's internet censorship and called for a new law to outlaw compliance with such requirements.

The four technology companies said earlier this week that they were not able to schedule an appearance with short notice but would testify at a similar House of Representatives hearing set for 15 February.

Representative Tom Lantos, the California Democrat who is co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which organised the briefing, said: "These massively successful high-tech companies, which couldn't bring themselves to send their representatives to this meeting today, should be ashamed.

"With all their power and influence, wealth and high visibility, they neglected to commit to the kind of positive action that human rights activists in China take every day. They caved in to Beijing's demands for the sake of profits, or whatever else they choose to call it."

Because his caucus is not an actual congressional committee, it does not have the power to compel companies to testify at its hearings. The US House of Representatives International Relations Committee does have that force, however.

Representative Christopher Smith, the New Jersey Republican who chairs the subcommittee holding the 15 February hearing, showed up late at Wednesday's briefing to issue a reminder that he and his colleagues are working on a draft legislation related to the foreign censorship matter.

He said: "Our request to these companies is: reverse yourselves; you can."

A draft of the legislation was not ready on Wednesday. But a spokesman for Smith said the proposal would be likely to require US internet service providers to locate their email servers outside of oppressive countries, establish a code of conduct for companies doing business with such regimes and set up a global internet freedom office within the State Department to co-ordinate an international strategy.

Cisco, for its part, distributed a statement at Tuesday's briefing confirming its attendance at Smith's upcoming hearing. The company acknowledged again that it sells its routers in China but that their inherent features, including the ability to filter content, are no different from those sold in any other country, including the US.

Microsoft and Yahoo! issued a joint statement in which they encouraged the US government to step up and take a leadership role in opening "government to government" dialogue with China and other countries "where internet content is treated more restrictively". Google's senior policy counsel, Andrew McLaughlin, echoed that idea in a blog entry and apologised for Google's absence, which he put down to "previously scheduled commitments".

The absence of the tech companies left Wednesday's briefing heavy on commentary from human rights activists and a representative from a US-China governmental advisory panel.

Several of those representatives accused each of the companies of squelching cyber dissidents or caving into the Chinese government in some way. Google, which launched a censorship-friendly version of its search engine in China last week, was a particular magnet for criticism.

The search giant's "current co-operation with the Chinese government on this matter also has prevented the Chinese government from having to respond to complaints from Chinese internet users that they are being denied access to the info they wish to obtain", said Carolyn Bartholomew, acting chairwoman of the congressionally appointed US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. She said China has the most sophisticated internet-filtering system in the world and tens of thousands of "internet police" on its payroll.

Bartholomew and several of the human rights representatives called for new legislation that would penalise companies that aided in censorship activities - an idea that had Representative Tim Ryan of Ohio, the briefing's chief organiser, nodding in agreement.

At the very least, Congress needs to pass legislation that would prohibit companies from turning over customer names to the Chinese government, Tim Malinowski of Human Rights Watch argued. He was referring largely to a recent incident in which Yahoo! was accused of turning over personal email records belonging to a Chinese journalist, leading to his conviction for leaking state secrets and a decade-long prison sentence.

John Palfrey, director of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, cautioned that new laws should only come into play if the technology industry can't work out the problems on its own.

Instead, he argued, Congress should encourage the industry to develop a set of guiding principles for companies - what he called a "common ethical pathway".

Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee, a Texas Democrat who sits on the human rights caucus, appeared briefly to appeal to the absentee companies.

She said: "This may be a time for a principle stand, because when you make a principle stand now, today, tomorrow the world will be open to so many who are now suffering under the oppression of censorship. So I would encourage my friends in the world of technology... that this is the time to cherish the Bill of Rights more than you've ever cherished it before."

His father's business went bankrupt and his family went to live in the country side. He graduated from medical school in province and now lives in Seoul alone. He dreams of marrying a rich girl so that he can set up his own private hospital. His first love Sin-Young comes knocking on his door after 20 years but he's no longer interested in her. He only aims to get famous by using Sin-Young's broadcasting network which will also enable him to meet some big star actresses. In other words, everything he does for Sin-Young is for his own sake.

He's the youngest son of the owner of the hospital. To people, he's just a troublemaker divorce. There are numbers of rumors about him. Some say he has eloped with a girl to the States and now living the life of a vagabond. Other say he has gambled away his money in Las Vegas. He's very popular among girls but he doesn't show every part of him. He always seems to be hiding something and doesn't completely open up his heart. His father had wanted him to go to be a doctor but he studied fine arts in college. He also married a girl whom his father extremely opposed and ran away to the States. But life in the States wasn't easy and his wife also leaves him. Since then, he hasn't opened up his heart to anybody. But this changes when he meets Sin-Young... He tries to do everything possible to make Sin-Young happy.

No Trespassing !!!

Last week, me n pheea went to old village by old mass transport. The trip was so long. We planned to go to our friend's house. He'd removed to new village near our office. Before that, we had been there by motorcycle. Then, he explained us the line we had to pick to go to his house.
The explanation seem so simple than the reality!!!
At the D day...... we lost in nowhere not known country .........
too much old ancient Chinese cemetery.... HiiIIIIIIIIII............. both of us so scare.......
Hope no ghost in rainy day.......Please help......
Frankly, we lost direction. We should start the trip from our office. that's more easy n faster also cheapest!!
But, in deep... I enjoy the trip. Fun !!! Being lost like some stranger from twenty something centuries into eighteen something centuries.... because the country so ... old !!

Thanks God, the bus was coming. For about 15 minutes later we arrived. He suprised. We miss the party. But, it's okay!! A friend of mine told me that we should thanks to God, because if we arrive early, we won't get into the house, its full!!! His house area 18m square, so tiny huhhh..

Not if it can help it; and probably not even if it can't. The search engine company is demanding that the US Department of Justice gets a court to enforce a request for one million random web addresses and records of all Google searches for a one-week period. The reason: to estimate how much pornography shows up when children go Googling.

The Bush administration's demand seems to be part of an effort to revive the 1998 Child Online Protection Act (Copa), which makes it a crime for commercial distributors of "material harmful to minors" (deemed as material appealing to the "prurient interest", including female breasts) not to protect their sites from access by minors.

However, Copa never took effect, and eventually the US Supreme Court ruled that it might be unconstitutional. Now, though, the Bush administration appears to be looking for fresh evidence that might suggest that filtering software, the preferred method suggested when Copa first failed the Supreme test, is less effective than before. That would mean showing that searches turn up porn sites not covered by filters.

But the request, with which MSN, AOL and Yahoo complied (Ask Jeeves was not asked), has got privacy shivers running up and down the internet's collective spine. Google apparently feels the same way: Nicole Wong, an associate general counsel for the company, says the company will fight the government's effort vigorously. "Google is not a party to this lawsuit, and the demand for the information is overreaching," she adds.

As Danny Sullivan noted at his SearchEngineWatch blog: "It's a stupid request, of course. It's sort of like the government asking a major car dealership to give you a list of random licence plate numbers rather than the Department of Motor Vehicles. Surely the government can generate its own list without forcing a private company to do this."

But while the list of searches and websites might be a huge amount of data, it is unlikely that any of it would lead back to you, or indeed any individual who runs a search or owns a site.

AOL, MSN and Yahoo were at pains to point out that no private data was passed on. At least, Yahoo did: "We are rigorous defenders of our users' privacy. We did not provide any personal information in response to the Department of Justice's subpoena. In our opinion, this is not a privacy issue. We complied on a limited basis and did not provide any personally identifiable information," the company told Sullivan (http://tinyurl.com/dwlds).

BURLINGAME, CALIF. - Microsoft has a message for consumers who use its search engine: Don't worry, your stuff is safe.

Any information the computer giant hands over as a result of a U.S. Department of Justice subpoena will contain "absolutely no personal data," according to a statement posted on a company blog over the weekend by Ken Moss, general manager of MSN Web Search. "Privacy of our customers is non-negotiable and something worth fighting to protect. We tried to strike the right balance in a very sensitive matter."

Microsoft's (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) assurances follow those from Time Warner's (nyse: TWX - news - people ) America Online and Yahoo! (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ), which said much the same thing last week. So why is Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) the lone holdout?

Perhaps the company really is worried about protecting your privacy. Much more likely: It is worried about protecting itself.

The federal government's requests--which amount to a list of 1 million random Web addresses and a week's worth of search queries--is supposed to help the government build a case that Internet porn is readily accessible to minors, thus creating a need for its once-denied Child Online Protection Act (COPA).

Google's claim that the subpoenas could reveal trade secrets is up for debate. Aitan Goelman, partner with the Washington, D.C.-based law firm of Zuckerman Spaeder, says he doubts the data the government is looking for would reveal how Google executes its searches. But he adds that a clever competitor could sift through the reports and might "be able to get from Point A to Point B and have insight into Google's methodologies."

It's more likely that Google is worried about the results of its search queries and not the technology that powers them. The compromise the Department of Justice has worked out with Google's rivals calls for the search engines to let the government see how often certain search terms were used, but won't let it look up specific Internet Protocol addresses to what individuals looked for.

That alone could prove embarrassing enough for Google. A public disclosure of exactly how much pornography is on the Internet and how often people look for it--the two data points that will result from fulfilling the government's subpoena--could serve to make the Internet look bad. And Google, as its leading search engine, could look the worst.

None of the search engines make a full disclosure of how much porn users are looking at. When America Online lists its most popular searches, for instance, porn references are scrubbed out. But Nielsen/NetRatings says that porn sites attracted 38 million unique viewers in December--or a quarter of all Internet surfers.

Google and its competitors all benefit from porn sites, which help generate search queries and page views. But Google is the only portal company that makes nearly all of its revenue from click-through advertising. Restricting porn and porn advertising--the likely aim of COPA's sponsors--could hurt Google disproportionately.

And filtering in general would also hurt Google more than its competitors. The Google brand is built on the notion that the engine gives users the clearest picture of the Web, without playing favorites. Restricting content in any way could hurt Google's carefully burnished image, its 60% market share for search queries and its share price.

Google should definitely release the information. It would be a different story if no precedent were set by Yahoo and MSN, but since they have disclosed their information, why shouldn’t Google? Do they have something to hide?

Overview
The Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo S is a terrible car for hauling sheets of plywood back from Home Depot or taking a family of five and their gear on a cross-country camping trip. Of course the same could be said of a Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxster, Corvette or dozens of other cars that have a high fun quotient and little practicality. The Turbo S, in contrast, is high on fun but also has its practical attributes.

At 3,005 pounds, the Beetle Turbo S is a solid little bugger--one that comes well equipped for $23,400 (that's before a $550 destination charge). This sticker represents a 47% premium over the $15,900 lowest-priced New Beetle, the GL, which comes with a 115-horsepower motor. Even the affordable GL, like all new Beetles, comes with a long list of standard features--but Wolfsburg's carmeisters packed extra treats into the Turbo S.

HIGHS:

The best feature of the Turbo S: its 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine. This silky power plant, which gets a boost of 10.5 pounds per square inch from an intercooled turbocharger, is shoehorned into the Beetle's front end and is attached to an equally righteous six-speed manual transmission that has final drives in both fifth and sixth gears. This combination propels the Turbo S to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and to a top speed (computer-controlled) of 130 mph.

The long feature set on the Turbo S includes four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes, a power glass sunroof, two-tone leather seats (heated up front), heated side mirrors, heated windshield washers, an eight-speaker Monsoon stereo/cassette player, an automatic air deflector and Volkswagen's electronic stability program (ESP). The only option is a dealer-installed trunk-mounted, six-disc CD changer, which runs about $350.

On the outside, VW distinguishes the Turbo S--which like all new Beetles is built in Puebla, Mexico--with revised front and rear fascia, including a front spoiler and fog lights and a dual exhaust. The Turbo S sits on 17-inch alloy wheels and fat low 45-series tires.

For 2002, Volkswagen fiddled with its warranty program. The good news: The new car warranty--which covers pretty much everything on or inside the car--is extended to four years or 50,000 miles (whichever comes first). And VW's 24-hour roadside assistance program has been expanded to four years or 50,000 miles. The tradeoff: The ten-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty has been cut back to five years/60,000 miles.

Great. But the point of the S wasn't supposed to be about the warranty but about the way the car delivers more performance than the housewife (base) edition. Not bashing housewives here, but they, as well as singles and empty nesters, now seem to be the primary target for the New Beetle and its sagging sales. So is the S enough to lift the image of the soft Beetle?

The Turbo S may trace its roots to an economical small-car platform but there's very little about this car that says "economy." The one exception is the stated EPA mileage of 23 city and 30 highway, or about the same as a family sedan such as a four-cylinder Honda (nyse: HMC - news - people ) Accord.

The Turbo S, like all Beetles, has a car key that folds into a key case and pops out at the click of a button. That's a small detail, but if you've ever put an ignition key in your pocket and had it gouge into your thigh you'll appreciate this.

In addition to the remote functions found on most new cars, the VW key and its case control the car's anti-theft (ignition and radio) system. Owners also get a valet key (which won't open the trunk in case you have your briefcase back there). One drawback: Extra or replacement keys can only be obtained from a VW dealer at about $60 a pop.

The steering wheel has two adjustments: up and down and in and out. One gripe: The height adjustment could use more range. That's about it for the gripes, though. The inside of the Turbo S is mostly about understated elegance. Switches and controls are firm and solid. Brushed aluminum is used sparingly and is complemented with a high-quality silvery plastic on the door panels.

Gauges are white on black in the Turbo S instead of the blue found in other Beetle models. The dash area closest to the driver and passenger are covered in attractive black rubber-like dimpled matting. Buyers who require fake wood in their cars should look elsewhere.

The front seats are snug but quite comfortable, with ample side bolstering. Twin cupholders (which can also be configured as one cupholder and one ashtray/coin tray) are located aft of the stick shift. For easier access, the cupholder tray swivels to the right. The center armrest can be folded back out of the way but, when the armrest is in position, the stalk of the stick shift feels about an inch too short.

Maybe it's atonement for the complete lack of heat in the original Beetle but the second-generation car is a hottie that can warm up the passenger cabin before you make it out of your neighborhood. Like all Beetles, the climate system comes with a replaceable filter for pollen, dirt and odors.

The New Beetle is called a five-passenger vehicle but is best suited for no more than four occupants. The rear seats are most appropriate for children but, like most two-door cars, it is a hassle getting small-fry seated and belted in the back. And while the trunk only has a capacity of 12 cubic feet, the rear seat folds down and give this New Beetle 27.1 cubic feet of storage. We found this space more than ample for our family's monthly haul from the local warehouse club--a load normally transported in a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

In a market where even a fully loaded Chevrolet Cavalier can sticker for over $17,000, the $24,000 tab on the Turbo S is competitive with the cars in its class. Of course, your respective local dealers are likely to lop off a higher percentage of the list price of the Cavalier than the Turbo S. To keep this latest Beetle well south of $30,000, Volkswagen held back on a few features.

One example: The rear view mirror on the Turbo S comes with manual dimming controls whereas the Beetle GLX has an automatic mirror. The GLX also comes with rain-sensitive windshield wipers. And the Turbo S, like all Beetles, has manual, rather than power, front seats. None of these minor limitations detract from the primary virtue of the Turbo S--the driving experience.

The Turbo S is a blast on the road. In stark contrast to prehistoric Bugs, this New Beetle is amazingly quiet, especially for a small car with 180 hp. The turbo kicks in smoothly. Some credit for the silent treatment may be due to VW's addition of a turbo noise filter on the S. If there is turbo lag with this car it isn't readily apparent.

Maximum torque, 173 pound-feet, comes on at 1,950 rpm and hangs in through 5,000 rpm. In short, the Turbo S has plenty of moxie both at the bottom and top end of its range.

Steering on the Turbo S is tight and responsive and the brakes feel up to the task of stopping the car as quickly as needed. The ride is solid, but not punishing; the Turbo S has no trouble maintaining its composure over railroad crossings and minor road bumps.

The stability system (ESP) uses the car's engine power, brakes and transmission to help stabilize the car if it is pushed beyond its normal limits--something that is not easy to do under typical driving conditions.

The speed-activated rear spoiler, which comes standard with the Turbo S and other Beetle turbos, is located just above the rear hatch. The spoiler pops up when the car exceeds 45 mph and lowers when speed drops below 10 mph. It is hard to believe that the sound the spoiler makes upon closing--similar to a power antenna in action--has generated so much hysteria in the automotive press.

That's not to say that Volkswagen couldn't do a better job with the spoiler's override switch. Who was the smart guy who decided to put this control underneath the dash? And why bother with an override switch if the car's computer still tells the deflector to move up or down at certain speeds? The car needs a real kill switch that's up front and visible.

But there are some head scratchers. While the Turbo S comes with 17-inch wheels, the spare is only 16 inches. Why is it smaller? The larger wheel won't fit inside the New Beetle's spare tire well. The Turbo S owners' manual cautions against driving any distance or at highway speeds when the spare is in use.

I got a cat, it sicks --diarhea, stomach's problems I guess-- The book suggests me worm medicine, nifural syrup n diet 12hr. Hiks... the kitten so miserable, orphan kitten left @ my trash box in front of my house. My brother named it Brooklyn. Someday I take its picture.

Almost all my family love Volkswagen's car, my cousin had 3 cars... old models,,, Combi, Beetle'73 and Variant. But they still OK, comfortable to ride. Nowadays I fall in love with New Beetle with its candy painting........green pastel like the one in The Mexicans......
